Dr. Penner has primary research interests in two fairly distinct areas. The first is the causes and consequences of prosocial actions, especially those that occur in an organizational context. The second is social psychological aspects of the provision of health care. Within this broad area, he is interested in communication processes and racial disparities in health care.

Dr. Penner is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society and the Society for the Psychologocal Study of Social Issues. He also served as President of SPSSI (Division 9 of APA), and is Adjunct Research Scientist at the University of Michigan's Research Center for Group Dynamics.
